Iron Drip Therapy in San Diego

The iron IV infusion is an infusion of iron at a much higher dose than can be taken in orally. An iron IV infusion is given to those whose blood counts are so low that taking oral iron supplements and increasing their intake of iron containing foods would not be effective or too slow to increase their iron levels.

What Is Iron Deficiency Anemia?

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common form of anemia and is a blood disorder that affects red blood cells. This happens when your body does not have enough iron to make hemoglobin, which is a substance in red blood cells that allows them to carry and deliver oxygen throughout the body, resulting in the symptoms listed above.

Why Is Iron IV Infusion Therapy Effective?

The major advantage of iron IV therapy over oral iron is that IV therapy is an effective way of ensuring the iron goes directly into the bloodstream unlike orally, which doesn’t get entirely absorbed as it has to go through the digestive system where some of it gets wasted through urine.

Can Iron Containing Foods Help With Iron Levels?

If you have been recommended iron IV infusions by your doctor chances are the amount of iron in food is not sufficient enough to adequately replete levels of iron in your body quickly enough.

However, iron-containing foods including beans, dark leafy vegetables like spinach, dark chocolate, and turkey are all good sources of iron and can be consumed in addition to getting iron IV infusions to support iron levels.

How To Measure Iron Levels:

There are a variety of reasons why someone has low iron levels. This is normally checked by your doctor with a simple blood test to check iron levels. Labs to check iron status include:

  • TIBC
  • Iron
  • Ferritin
  • Transferrin
