PRP Hair Restoration in San Diego
PRP hair restoration is a regenerative medicine treatment option for stimulating the growth of a person’s hair using their own blood byproducts. The procedure involves several small injections in the scalp in the particular areas the patient is looking to gain fullness in.
What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?
PRP (platelet rich plasma) is a blood product derived from your own blood that has a higher concentration of platelets compared to regular blood. PRP contains many different growth and healing factors that the body uses in wound healing and soft-tissue repair. PRP has traditionally been used to treat orthopedic conditions i.e. tendon and ligament repair, however PRP therapy has recently been a growing solution for aesthetics, including PRP facials and hair restoration.
How Does PRP Work For Hair Restoration?
The high levels of platelets contained within the PRP contain proteins, growth factors, and healing factors which help to decrease inflammation, increase circulation to the hair follicles, and stimulate the growth of hair follicles.
One study found an increase in the number of follicles in people with androgenic alopecia after PRP treatments every 2 weeks for 3 months.
Another study showed improvements in the number of hairs, the strength of the hair roots, and the thickness of those hairs in people receiving PRP injections every 2-3 weeks for 3 months.
Another study showed that PRP was more effective for hair loss than Rogaine.
There need to be more studies, however these preliminary results are very promising. Additionally, we have seen great improvement in patients first hand.
PRP Has Healing And Rejuvenating Properties For Increased Hair Growth
The process is simple and involves your blood being drawn from your arm, then spun for several minutes in a centrifuge in order to separate the different components (platelets, plasma, and red and white blood cells).
The platelet rich plasma which has healing and rejuvenating properties is extracted from the blood and is drawn up into a syringe and then injected into the areas of your scalp that need increased hair growth.
This entire process typically takes under one hour to perform.
Who Is Best Suited For PRP Hair Restoration?
Men and women of all ages with recent or ongoing androgenic hair loss are good candidates for PRP hair restoration. While PRP can sometimes be helpful for other types of hair loss i.e. due to scarring, thyroid issues, or Lupus, it is typically not recommended.
The best results are seen in patients who are treated once per month for 3-4 months.
It is also not recommended for those with completely bald areas.
Most people will experience improvements in the number of hairs, the strength of those hairs, and the thickness of the hair.
Treating with additional agents like minoxidil, C8, finasteride, or Joovv low-level laser therapy may also be recommended on a case-by-case basis for best results.

How Do I Prepare For A PRP Treatment?
How Long Does A PRP Treatment Take?
Sessions typically take 1-1.5 hours from taking the blood from the patient, separating the PRP, then injecting it one site at a time in the desired treatment areas.
How Many PRP Hair Restoration Treatments Are Recommended?
For optimal results we recommended PRP injections every 2-3 weeks for 3 months based on our clinical experience.
Post Treatment
After your PRP hair restoration treatment, your scalp will be flushed from the treatment which may last several hours.
We recommend not using any products on the hair or scalp and avoiding direct sun exposure to the treated area for several days.
Other than this, there is very little “down time” experienced. Patients are encouraged to avoid alcohol the weeks following the procedure to avoid drying out the skin.
